Downtown Durham Drum Circle

Along with City of Durham and Durham Parks and Recreation, we are hosting our second fabulous Community Drum Circle. Drummers of all levels welcome, dancer and hoopers, too. The first 30 minutes will be a brief intro to hand drumming techniques. Last month’s event was the perfect creative community event. Excellent turnout of more than sixty folks, good rhythms, great weather and smiles and dancing galore. Durham ROCKS! CCB Plaza is located in downtown Durham at the intersection of Foster St and E Chapel Hill St. Join us! (another one on October 4th). Check out the great photos of our fun, community experience. We have lots of drums and hand percussion to loan.
Sacred Arts Community

at Music Explorium, donation basis.
This event will co-create a community devoted to sacred play including drumming, dancing, singing, and various forms of musical, visual and verbal expression. We will foster an atmosphere of safety and trust where transformation, healing and growth are nurtured. This space welcomes contributions from all spiritual traditions and paths as we journey together, celebrating the sacred in each of us. You are welcome to share poem, song, chant, story, rhythm, dance, prayer, or blessing. Feel free to bring a light, healthy snack for the community. Donations help maintain the event space. Other 4th Friday dates are September 26 and October 25.

Fun!! Hand Drumming Techniques with Sue-Anne Solem, 10 - 11 am, $15. ages 5 - 7 and fun parents, too - for one small price. Learn the basics of steady beat and rhythm using hand drums. Lots of drumming and hand percussion games, too.
Creative Drumming with Sticks with Shannon Morrow, 11:15 am - 12:30 pm, $15, ages 7 - 11
Always wanted to play stick drums? Learn the basics of playing with drum sticks, and learn a few simple beats you can play on snare drums and toms. Then learn how to make your own found sound drum sets at home! You'll explore creative options for making drum sets out of household throw away such as buckets, pots and pans, boxes and other discarded items. Drumming is good for the body, brain and attitude!We have drums and sticks to loan.
Hand Drumming Techniques and Drum Songs, with Cathy Kielar 1 - 2 pm, $15, ages 8-11.
Learn hand drumming basics and play interlocking rhythms. Great intro class for playing djembe.
Improvising Music for Everyone

YOU CAN MAKE MUSIC ! Learn the joy of spontaneous music-making. All levels, any instrument or voice. JOY IN MUSICAL COMMUNITY ! Learn to improvise music for community-building and personal pleasure. This class series supports the joy and wonder of spontaneous music making can be yours whether you have years of musical training, or just enjoy singing in the shower! To get comfortable with free improvising (without chord progressions), we will explore the elements of music in small groups, where everyone is an equal partner. All are welcome (from classical, jazz, folk or untrained backgrounds, on voice, instrument or percussion - as well as dancers, visual artists and those wishing to explore and enhance their creativity). Each class is an essential part of the creative series, so sign up for the whole series.
Shannon Morrow's Sonic Meditatons class has been very popular.
There are requests for additional classes, so Shannon plans to start another session in coming Winter.
