This summer we are facilitating drumming
with kids and adults in settings like camps, health care studies,
churches, festivals, community gatherings and private
parties. So, you may wonder what a facilitated drumming event is
like. The word facilitate means to "make easier," and the trained facilitator shows the group ways that make the creative music making experience easier.
The group is shown how to attentively listen, play
rhythms together, follow and lead fun rhythm games and enjoy
the spontaneous nature of the group song. The facilitator does not
teach specific traditions, like in an ethnically specific drumming
class. The facilitator helps keep the group on a pleasing musical track
that is fun for everyone. Also, lots more than drums are played.
A huge
variety of percussion like chimes, shakers, claves,
whistles, kazoos, tambourines, gongs, marimbas, found sound,
didgeridoos, and even a Hang drum is played.
Yes, a rare and wonderful Hang drum! Spontaneous group music that
creates community, relaxation and
loads of fun happens! Kids like playing and leading rhythm games with
their
family and/or peers. Adults like the relaxing and creative experience
of playing music in community.
